Sarmad Sultan Khoosat a National treasure in performing arts, was born into a family of artists. He is a recipient of three Gold medals, a role of honour and a Master of Science degree in Psychology from Government College University, Lahore.
He rose to prominence during the year 1999 through a television sitcom “ Shashlic” which he wrote, directed, produced & played a lead in. Since then he has contributed a lot to TV & Film.
Right from the beginning of his career, Khoosat’s works, particularly as a director, have been noted for the breadth of their technical & aesthetic accomplishments. Critics have hailed his serials for the complex themes he has explored through his work. In 2011, Khoosat directed the family drama Humsafar, and his career positively skyrocketed. The tale of a star-crossed couple, became an international hit, which had viewers anticipating each week’s episode with an enthusiasm unwitnessed since the heyday of the Pakistani drama serials in the 1980s.
Khoosat’s feature film, Manto, based on life and works of the legendary writer Saadat Hasan Manto, however, marked his biggest success to date. As an actor, his portrayal of the troubled genius is one of the finest performances that Pakistani cinema has witnessed. It won several awards in various international festivals. His craft as a director has proven that even such complex themes can be made appealing & relevant to a mass audience. This particular film has significantly boosted the new wave of Pakistani Cinema.
Alongside a full time career in film and television, he is an academic too; he has been teaching ‘film’ & other related subjects for the past 12 years. He has taught at prestigious institutes in Pakistan. He has represented Pakistan at various international, national, art & literary festivals.
